Power

protection devices

Uninterrupted power
  • The use of protection devices, allows the LAN to continue operation during power disruptions. Two categories of battery –power protection devices are commonly used.

Provides continuous power to the device. Batteries are kept via the power outlet. With a power disruption, the batteries continue to provide power until they are drained – this can range from minutes to hours depending on the size of the UPS.

     Not a continuous power supply

Monitors power line at the outlet and begins supplying power only if a disruption is detected.

At a minimum, the file serves and all other critical devices should be equipped with a UPS or SPS. Power disruptions are more than mere inconveniences; they can lead to many problems. Consider the following:

  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)

Provides continuous power to the device. Batteries are kept via the power outlet. With a power disruption, the batteries continue to provide power until they are drained – this can range from minutes to hours depending on the size of the UPS.

  • Standby power supply (SPS)

    • Power disruptions can corrupt file –making them unreliable or unusable
    • File backup may exist, but they may be out of date
    • Restoring files is a time-consuming task.

INSTALLATION PLANNING AND PRACTICES

It has been said, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link”. Similarly, a network system is only as fast as its slowest component. When planning and installing your network system, pay particular attention to the components you choose. It does no good, for example, to install the highest quality category 7 cabling and connecting hardware, then use category 3 patch panels. At best your structured wiring system will provide you with category 3 performance.

DOCUMENTATION

We will make certain that each wall plate jack is marked with a unique identity that corresponds to a jack on a patch panel in the wiring closet. Once this is done, it is a simple matter to make moves, changes or additions. Troubleshooting is also made easier when you know where to look.
